Social research

What do we do when we do research? It is something that many ask me whenever I tell them what I do for a job.

Mostly, it is what I’d call an “exploration”: of human beings, of society, of peculiar productions and relations.

So, here’s a short recap of the main activities me and my research group usually go through whenever we want to study a specific field or situation.

If you have a project in mind and would like a professional advice to carry it out or if you want to collaborate with me and my group to realize it, feel free to contact me.

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls”: a reseacher life

There’s almost no limit to the things you can study. Even if you have never even heard of something before, you can still approach it and find what you were looking for (and often things you were not looking for but are there, nevertheless). What is important is to look at it with your eyes wide open and a scientific method.

But where to start?

Main steps of a social research

Bibliographical elaboration

First of all, even before you write down your research project, you need to know more about what you’re going to analyze. A study of the bibliography and sitography already available on the topic of interest is where you start, but also something that you keep working on in the following months.

Development of project and analysis tools

When you have a better idea of what your research is going to be about, you develop a research project in which, moving from previous material published on that specific topics, you present your research question and indicate the tools you wil be using to uncover it.
Depending on how you want to address the topic, in fact, you may opt for a qualitative approach or a quantitative one (or a mix of the two). In both cases, though, you will need specific tools to approach your study, such as questionnaires or interview trails, which you’ll have to develop with attention and be ready to change if needed.

Observation / interviews / questionnaires / …

Here comes the fun part… when you can finally see with your own eyes how the topic you’ve been studying on books takes shape concretily. Participant observations, interviews to key witnesses of the phenomena, questionnaires and more: depending on the topic you are studying, one method could be more suitable than the others.

Data analysis

After this operational phase, an analysis of the data obtained from questionnaires, interviews and other tools follows. Depending on the focus of your research, you can use these data to identify meaningful elements, to discover relevant connections, to emphasize specific contents and so on.

Reports, books and promotion

Results of the research can find an outlet in papers, scientific journals, reports of different kinds and even books. They can also be shared during specific events or through videos or published in a website where other people can use them to further develop the study

My work in research

Dialogo tra generazioni. Sul ruolo del delegato sindacale (2017)

Dialogue between generations. On the role of the labor union delegate
The results of a study on the evolution of the role of the labor union delegate, conducted using the methods of sociological research, are communicated in a hybrid methodology halfway between the essay and the theatrical screenplay.
A theatrical show and a docu-film inspired by this work are currently under development.

L’Artigiano alchimista (2015)

The alchemist craftsman
Starting from 2008, the economic crisis reached Veneto: however, some sectors have been less involved than others; among these, the agri-food sector. Some companies have not only survived the period of criticality, but during those years have changed to reach levels of absolute quality.
The book reports the results of the case study carried out on 20 of these companies: a scientific analysis, then, but also a journey in a surprising world to find an answer to a specific question: is there a formula or a recipe to create excellence?
